The ovens to produce charcoal facility are constructed in such a way that no additional energy is needed to keep the process running.
The production

The chopped wood is put into a vessel which is placed into the oven. The temperature in the oven is about 800 ºC. The oven is closed, so no oxygen can influence the pyrolysis process. After about 8 hours the wood is converted into charcoal. The formed gasses during the production process are burned and directly used to heat up the ovens. So no additional energy is necessary

The excess heat of the pyrolysis process can be used to dry the incoming wood. With a large production facility the excess heat can be used for district heating. Overall a very environmentally friendly production facility. More information about this production facility can be found at the following web location: http://www.hot.ee/greencoal
